Crawl! no.9: The Arwich Grinder, coming soon!

Cat's out of the bag. It's finished. But you'll have to wait a few weeks. We'll count on +Mario Torres+Daniel Bishop and +Sean Poppe to drop a few teasers until it gets its general release around January 17th. Of course there are perks to being a subscriber, they get their copy first! I made a small run to make that happen, but I just happen to have a couple extras that I'm willing to send before I go on my trip. Since it's Christmas, and I'm feeling generous (but still pretty sick), I'll make it easy. I'll pick one random commenter and another who can humor me with their secret remedy for common cold symptoms. You have until Noon, PST, December 26th.

End of the Year News!

And it's mostly ALL GOOD!

First off, from Straycouches Press, the publisher of this little zine, I'd like to introduce D.A.M.N. Issue 1. A DCC RPG Adventure and News Magazine:

http://www.rpgnow.com/product/124225/DAMN---DCC-RPG-Adventure-Magazine-and-News

ON SALE NOW! yep!

Secondly, Crawl! no. 9 is finished! And approved! And on the way to the printers!

And now for the bad news. I'm sick, I have a stupid cold and my girlfriend doesn't want me to work. And that's because I have to get better by the 26th. I want to get no.9 shipped to my subscribers before I go on this long-ass winter vacation to Bogota, Colombia. But I kind of made my promise to get #9 out ASAP, it didn't' happen in November when I wanted to. But it's done. The art is fantastic. The adventure is wicked, a 0-level funnel by the writing monster-machine +Daniel Bishop. I even had room to squeeze a gruesome little short encounter of his in the end. So if all goes well, subscribers should see a little zine in their mailbox before the end of the year. The general public will have to wait for me to set up the sites to take orders for it. My lovely girlfriend blames my cold on stress, and she thinks the stress is because of Straycouches Press. She might be right, but she is totally right that I have to be well before I fly to South America... gulp. How can I be so excited and sick at the same time?! Somehow between now and Thursday I have to make and ship 150 zines, pack 3 weeks of clothes and two bicycles. And Chismas is smack in the middle of it...

Crawl! no.1 Special Edition (New!) and (New!) Bundles!

I'm happy to announce a new print of the debut issue. First off, there is nothing "new" in it. The only thing that was added was the complete spells and spellburn of Van Den Danderclanden (that were originally found in Crawl! no.3 and as a free digital download). So, to repeat, there is no new material--just a fresh layout by Matt Hildebrand and the added spells and spellburn. Digital (PDF) editions will be updated at no charge and available soon. New customers, completists and collectors can buy the new print edition of no.1 now!
Directly! or...

Ship to:

And also new bundles, hopefully ready for sale today. The first bundle will be a complete "Collect Them All" bundle, all issues from 1 to 8, great for new customers that want every issue with a couple clicks. Then there will be what I call the "And the rest!" This bundle if for those that stumble upon the new Crawl! no.1 special edition at their FLGS and want the rest and can't wait for their FLGS to order them.

(btw, I give retailers a good discount, contact crawl @ straycouches.com for more info!)

Print Bundles! (and news...)

I'm trying something new.

tl;dr (click Bundle! above or This!.)

First off, I've had a few people asking if they can buy all the issues as a bundle and get a discount like there is if you buy the PDFs in a bundle. To be honest, print copies are expensive and it takes a lot of time to make (time=money) but I still think they're worth having, heck I've been selling every issue at cover price, shipping included (unless you're overseas or in Canada, but I'm sure you guys understand why I have to charge you folks extra...). So a physical product for as cheap as I've been charging shipped 1st class... It's a bargain but it really costs me money in the end. But I love you. But I've decided to make available, for a limited time, a bundle. If you buy 1 through 7, you get number 1 for free.

2nd, I've updated the bundle on RPGnow so it's now 1-7, and no.1 now only $1.

3rd, people kept asking me if there was an easy way to buy several issues at once. Because of how I was using both Google Checkout and Paypal, it wasn't easy for me to make a shopping cart. You had to buy each issue separately. Since Google Checkout is going by the way of the dodo bird (gone/extinct/no-more), I only have Dwolla (which hasn't been fruitful, to tell the truth) and Paypal as payment options. So in a few day (I hope) I plan to update the Buy Now! page so it's a shopping cart, and you can buy multiple copies with one transaction through Paypal.

4th, what about number 8? It's APPROVED! It'll be going to print soon, and I hope to have it for sale in a week or so. But I want to try something new! I discovered (via +Stacy Dellorfano ) a site called Gumroad. I like it. The Bundle is available NOW! <-click that, if you want to give it a try. In a couple days I plan to make No.8 available for Pre-Order using the same system.

Almost there...

Ok, finally an update. I got a little kick in the butt this morning about the lack of issues this year. I'm truly sorry. But there is good news. Number 8 is pretty much done. I hope to have layout finished and the final copy sent in for approval by Friday. Yep, and if it gets approved, it'll go to print NEXT WEEK. Yuppers. I don't like talking about my releases until it gets approved. But my track-record has been good. So here's a teaser of the cover, it'll give you a good idea what's in it...

The cover design is just a rough mock-up. But the art is amazing, it's by the fan favorite +Jason Sholtis. It'll be a wrap-around cover. The internal art is also amazing, and I'm waiting on one final piece, and it should be doozy. I hope you like it. I hope it's worth the wait. I've been working non-stop on it...

More Excuses...

Sorry for the delay and any orders for print copies that were made in the last 2.5 weeks. I've been out of town, off the grid and being stupid in the desert for an annual desert camping trip that I've been doing for the past 10 years. Yes, it's dusty and full of hippies. But it's also full of crusty punks, metal heads and hard working artists...

I also came back to a dead computer. It took me two days to fix, but it's pretty much fixed. Long-story short; bad hard-drive or bad drivers or bad SSD design kept my computer from booting. I fixed it yesterday, mostly. But now I can get back to work...

I have orders to fill (Crawl#1 was sold-out, and now restocked.) A couple DCC RPG Adventures to edit. Crawl! #8 to finish, I still need art and some editing done. And then another project to work on, and ... man, I'm trying not to stress.

On a lighter note, I am sorry to say that Amplified D&D (D&D with Megaphones) didn't happen, failure rate for bad ideas are high at Desert Trip. Maybe next year...

Bad At This

Bad news: I haven't posted anything for over a month. Sorry about that. I have no excuse. Crawl! #8 is finished, writing wise. It's currently with my editor. I'll nag him later. The cover is being worked on, and I still need to find some interior art. Then layout, then submit for approval and then it can go on sale.

Good news: Number #9 is already written, and will come hot on the tail of #8. And then number 10 is mostly written, so it'll come quickly after that!

Submit! It's probably my fault for lack of communicating in general. But submissions have slowed a bit. I'm sitting on a small stack of material that will be part of #10. Somewhere down the line is a nautical/pirate/maritime themed issue. If you have any ideas, or submissions. Or want to take a stab at writing on of my ideas that I don't think I'm talented enough to do myself, let me know.

Needed! I really need a steady stable of artists and writers that are willing to take on an idea or concept of mine. Think you got what it takes? Let me know!

Thanks for everything: I sold out Gen Con in 1-day, apparently. And I somehow did this and forgot to remind folks about it on here that I would have them for sale again... crazy, I know. Thanks to everyone that helped make that happen. Especially the good folks at Goodman Games and their +Dungeon Crawl Classics Role Playing Game and +Jen Brinkman for delivering the goods to their booth.

Burning Man: Anyone going to that Dirt-Rave-Thing-In-The-Desert? I'll be there with my Bicycle Gang collaborating with a bunch of other bicycle gangs from LA. Our camp is called Ridazz Camp. I'll be there this weekend, and gone until after labor day. I'll be running a game of AD&D (Amplified D&D) on Thursday at our camp. You won't be able to miss us. It'll be loud.

HAPPY FREE RPG DAY!

There aren't that many gaming shops in LA, and only one participates in Free RPG Day. Yes, it's lame. So I couldn't get a table at this local shop, to run DCC RPG. I'm heading over any way in a few minutes. But I thought I'd share this:

More Adventures...? A query.

tl;dr

Would you be interested in regularly released adventure compilation?
Would you be interested in one-page dungeons in every issue of Crawl? With the possibility of a compilation down the line?
Both?

End tl;dr

I ask the same thing over on the Official Goodman Games Forums

I realize there are two camps, those that DIY and make their own adventures/settings/campaigns and those (like myself) that rely on 3rd Parties to create them for you. So this is mostly for those, like me, that are always looking for more adventures to use, steal from, and hack into their campaigns.

Crawl! #4 was one of my more popular issues, and I think it's because it was an adventure module. I specifically designed it to be modular, so you can steal the forest, the town, the dragon or the dungeon, and I think it was successful on that part, but it was also a complete adventure on it's own. So that's why I picked it as a whole issue of Crawl. I dont' think I can't do that every time, but if something comes my way that fits that model, I would surely do that.

And still, one of the number one requests I get is More Adventures. Almost every 3rd Party DCC product out there, so far, has been either an adventure or campaign setting. So there is obviously still demand. On a Transylvanian Adventures thread was brought up a "Dungeon Magazine" like product. I was wondering if there is a demand for such a thing? I proposed that I'd help publish something like it, if I could get a good producer to manage the project. If I could, I can see it happening. But it reminded me of an idea I already had, or planned on doing with Crawl, and that's adding a short adventure to every issue. Due to the format of my zine, it would be more like a 1 or 2 page adventure at most. Then that reminded me of the One-Page Dungeon. If I were to get one-page dungeon submissions, I could crank them out a lot quicker because art & maps are already included as part of a 1-page-dungeon submission. The only difference is, it'd have to be DCC RPG compatible, and my format would be landscape instead of portrait (and some other details designers would have to be aware of.) And heck, if it was in this format I might be able to be the producer/project manager myself.

What do you think?

Zine Machine

I had a bunch of orders today, and I realized that I was out of #5 and #6. So I had some already printed, and I started making a bunch. Then I realized I haven't shared my zine-making technique that I promised to share a while back. So I pulled out my cheap Fancy-Phone and took pics.

This is how I make the physical zines.

I do things factory style, which means I don't make each zine one at a time, I systematically do all the steps in batches. It's faster, it becomes mindless work, so you can watch TV, even read, or think about other things while you crank out a zillion zines.

1. First I collate everything, so I have covers and pages all in the right order.

2. Staple. Staple first! It keeps the pages straight. I staple them all, and put them all in a pile.

3. Fold using my Zine-Fold-o-Matic(tm) (see below.) It's easier than eye-balling, and it gets a basic fold in pretty much the right spot, and it's not going to cause carpal tunnel syndrome from folding, pressing. Again, stack them all.

Zine fits between the flaps. Not exactly, but close. You need some play.
I bow it like this to make sure it's centered. This is the most important part.
Fold! I use my whole hand so I don't get cramps or RSI.
4. Hard fold with something that's hard, that doesn't stain or scratch. A bone-tool is nice, I guess. I use a little shot-glass. Done.

Shot Glass for a harder edge
The Zine-Fold-0-matic is a piece of corrugated plastic that I stole off the street. I hate those signs, they're all over my neighborhood. Most are taking advantage of the low income folks and those on the brink of foreclosure, vultures I tell you. I steal them all, and use them for other projects. I took this one, cut it in half, lengthwise. I measured out a zine, and scored where they'd fold side so it folds easily.

Rule for scale, I used a physical zine for the measurements. Four scores. There will be a gap between the edges of the zine and the plastic-folder-thing. This is OK.

This is to show the scores. I cut through one side, and only one side. You don't want to make the flaps too big, or it won't fold. Or too small, it'll kinks the pages.

That's it! Let me know if you have any questions.

P.S. #7 is in layout.

Bonus Tips: Get a stamp for your return address and use address labels for the recipient. Writing out addresses separately sucks. I did hand label a few, but if there is more than 1 or 2, I always cut and paste their address into a template, and print.

Swords & Wizardry Appreciation Day!

It's in full effect. Lots and lots of good stuff, all compatible with any OSR game, even DCC RPG. My posts (yes, plural) are over at my personal blog:

http://reverend-dak.blogspot.com

Go, man. Go! I'm giving away a new zine for S&W related to one of the articles. Heck, it might become _a thing._

In regards to Crawl! number 7, I finished setting up my new computer, and layout of the new issue begins SOON!

Might As Well Write...

I'm stuck on a 7" tablet and an old netbook for my Internet access. Fortunately the netbook has a keyboard, so I can at least write. Over at my personal blog, Reverend_Dak_Dot_Blogspot (I try keep my personal business somewhere else, so those not interested in my other habits, or hobbies, don't have to be bothered with non-Crawl! or DCC RPG content), I'll be participating in Swords & Wizardry Appreciation Day. For those that aren't familiar, S&W was my first taste of the OSR, and my go-to reference for everything from classic monsters, classes, magic and treasure. I use S&W as the basis for my OSR Conversion; a series of conversion tips & tricks for DCC RPG. I'll be writing a bit for S&W Appreciation Day but anything I do for S&W will be 100% compatible with DCC RPG and 99.99% compatible with other OSR games too. (That's the great thing about these OSR inspired games.)

I'll also be giving away some stuff! So check it out. Friendly reminders are assured.

For the time being check out the free/online d20 S&W Reference Documents at: http://www.d20swsrd.com/

I've Been Failing My Luck Checks

That, or I really suck at this. A week or so ago I hit a streak of bad luck. My bicycle, a 1971 Raleigh/Carlton Competition, decided to snap a chain in the middle of the street which also broke the front derailleur. Luckily I was just starting from a stop, but I still smashed into my bike in the middle of the street. Before that I blew a flip-flop, fortunately I was still home. Earlier that week someone stripped the tail lights from my truck, and I had to yell at the postoffice boss about lazy postmen. Soon after that my girlfriend's car decided it wants to stall every few miles and basically run like shit. But the worst of all, my primary computer with all my publishing software and all the art decided to die. My guess is that the video card or GPU died, because I can't plug it into a TV (HDMI) or a monitor (VGA). This sucks because I need it to do my work, which makes my money. I can't edit adventures, nor can I layout or work on the art for the latest issue Crawl! Yep. The writing has been done for a while, it's been in editing for a month. It's pretty much done. I should have been finished two weeks ago. But I can't finish it without a computer, and I can't afford a new one, yet.

Just thought you all should know what the hold-up is. I already have the next three issues planned, and I'm excited for them. Number 7 is coming, just delayed. It's annoying. But I should play the lottery in case things change.

Retailers: I've been contacted by a couple FLGSs. I'd love to work with you and get my zine into your shops! Please check your email. I had one bounce back.

On Sale Now at Microcosm Publishing

Wow, check it. Got contacted by Microcosm Publishing, an indie bookshop and publishing house in Portland. They had samples of Crawl! for a few months, but only recently did they take a look at them. And they're stoked. They ordered several copies, now they're on sale over there. If you're in Portland, I wonder if you can walk in and buy them? It's not totally clear, but what is clear is that you can order them online from them directly. Awesome! http://microcosmpublishing.com/catalog/artist/reverend_dak

Upcoming Games

To continue my support of the DCC RPG 2012 World Tour I'll be attempting to run a public game every month. This is my schedule, so far:

As before, there will be SWAG.

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

OrcCon in two days...

Just a friendly reminder that I will be at OrcCon on Friday & Saturday. I'll be running two DCC RPG games, one on Friday night from 8pm until finished and Saturday afternoon from 2pm til done. They'll both be beginner friendly games, though I will let folks bring 1st level characters if they make them and bring them. Anyone who plays on the Friday game will also be allowed to level their character and play that character on Saturday.

I'll be running the first two Appendix N Adventures from Brave Halfling Publishing.

On Friday, 8PM, I'll be running The Ruins of Ramat:

It is mid-spring, the time when the land’s rulers and their men-at-arms go to war with their neighbors. Nearly every able person is already involved in such conflicts, or helping the remaining militia protect the local village.

A little girl comes running and crying into the center of the village. When questioned, she sobs that she and her dog were playing just outside of town, by Rose Hill, when a giant, clawed creature came up out of the ground and took her dog. The girl is completely terrified and her dog, which never normally leaves her side, is nowhere to be seen. You and your companions volunteer to look into the matter.

Saturday, 2PM, will be The Vile Worm:

Deep within the forest, an ancient oak has grown huge, twisted, and evil. Ages ago, a  savage  cult  haunted  these  woods  and  this  tree  became  the  focus  of  their unspeakable rites. Below it, they carved out a chamber of sacrificial horror where innocent victims were offered to a hideous worm-like god. As the centuries passed, the cult faded into the mists of time, but the twisted old oak stood fast, awaiting the day when the creeping evil in the dark below would be summoned  once more.

Even if you can't play or make my game, make sure you stop by and say hi. I'll be running around playing games when I'm not running my own.  I'll also have a few copies of my zines if anyone is interested in buying a copy from me there.

I will have SWAG.
